Dig In, West Pullman: 'We Sow We Grow' Kicks Off 2026 Volunteer Garden Season This Spring

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/West Pullman ·

Spring is officially in the air on the Far South Side — and West Pullman's beloved community garden nonprofit is calling all green thumbs to grab a shovel. We Sow We Grow, based at 11958 S. Union Avenue, has announced its 2026 Volunteer Days series, with the first session set for Saturday, April 4 at 9:00 AM. The nonprofit, whose mission is to grow the neighborhood through gardening and education, has lined up multiple volunteer days throughout the season to keep community members engaged well into the warmer months.

We Sow We Grow has become one of West Pullman's most cherished grassroots institutions, turning a love of the land into a vehicle for community connection, youth education, and neighborhood pride. Their hands-in-the-soil approach reflects a broader truth about the Far South Side renaissance: the most lasting change often starts at the block level, season by season and seed by seed. With West Pullman simultaneously seeing a wave of major investment — from new affordable housing to commercial development — efforts like We Sow We Grow ensure that community roots run just as deep as the big-dollar projects taking shape nearby.

Whether you're a seasoned gardener or a first-time volunteer, We Sow We Grow welcomes everyone ready to invest a few hours in their neighborhood. Head to wesowwegrow.org or reach out at [email protected] to sign up for the April 4 kick-off and future volunteer days. The garden — and West Pullman — will be better for it.
