Logan Square Gets a New Latin Speakeasy — Born Right Here in the Neighborhood
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Logan Square ·
Logan Square's bar scene just got a whole lot more exciting — and this one hits close to home. Culebra, a Puerto Rican- and Caribbean-themed cocktail speakeasy, opened this week in the basement of Lonesome Rose, taking over the former Golden Teardrops space. And the man behind it couldn't be more of a local: Diego Garcia-Gonzalez, a hospitality veteran who was born and raised right here in Logan Square.
Garcia-Gonzalez, who is half Mexican and half Puerto Rican, spent over a decade working his way up in the industry — starting as a busboy at Logan Square's Parson's before becoming lead bartender at Lonesome Rose. Now, at 28, he's finally bringing his vision to life with Culebra, a celebration of Latino culture through cocktails, music, and food. Guests can expect a full bar menu featuring spirits from Latin America and the Caribbean, Latin and Chicago house music, and a tight but inventive food menu developed with chef Daniel Maysonet Rivera of Jungle Bird in San Juan — including a standout Culebra sando, chicken thigh pinchos, and a rare arroz con jueyes made with blue crab and pegao rice.
This is exactly the kind of homegrown story Logan Square loves to champion. Stop into the basement of Lonesome Rose and raise a glass to Diego — a neighborhood kid who built something beautiful right where he grew up.
