Fresh Faces in The Loop: A New CEO, a Michelin-Pedigree Restaurant, and a Wave of Exciting New Openings

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/The Loop ·

The Loop is rolling into spring with a burst of fresh energy — and the people leading the charge just got a powerful new voice. This week, the Chicago Loop Alliance officially named Dr. Suzet McKinney as its new president and CEO, effective May 11. McKinney brings serious credentials to the role: she previously served as CEO of the Illinois Medical District and deputy commissioner at the Chicago Department of Public Health, and most recently directed life sciences at developer Sterling Bay. She steps in with a clear vision, noting that the Alliance "is well-situated to leverage the increased residential activity in the Loop, as well as new corporate neighbors."

The timing couldn't be better. The Loop's retail vacancy rate has now fallen for two consecutive years — dropping from 29.8% in 2024 to 28.5% in 2025 — and a fresh crop of businesses is making their mark downtown. Food lovers have plenty to celebrate: Mariela, a highly anticipated new restaurant from the team behind Michelin Bib Gourmand-recognized Mirra, is set to open in The Loop next month, bringing its acclaimed Mexican-Indian fusion flair to a new address. Meanwhile, beloved Midwest pop-culture retailer Raygun is slated for a spring 2026 debut at 133 N. State St., joining a growing roster of new arrivals that includes Mendocino Farms, River Roux Café and Bistro, and Haire's Gulf Shrimp on the Riverwalk.

Whether you're grabbing lunch at a new spot or stopping in to welcome a brand-new neighbor, there's never been a better time to explore what's new in The Loop. Stay up to date on all the latest openings and happenings at loopchicago.com.
