From Office District to Urban Village: The Loop's Reinvention Is the Talk of Chicago's Design World

The Loop's transformation from a traditional 9-to-5 office district into a vibrant, mixed-use neighborhood is generating serious buzz — and this month, Chicago's top architects, developers, and city officials gathered to celebrate and shape that very vision. At Bisnow's Chicago Architecture and Design Summit and Construction and Development Summit, both held April 14 at The Drake Hotel, industry leaders declared The Loop to be in the middle of nothing short of a rebirth. "What's happening now, in some ways, is a rebirth. It's a reinvestment. It's a recalibration," said Charles Smith, principal at CannonDesign.

Central to that transformation is the highly anticipated Google headquarters at the renovated Thompson Center, 100 W. Randolph Street. The tech giant recently tapped CBRE for office leasing and Savills for retail leasing at the landmark building, with interior construction expected to run through 2027 and approximately 2,000 employees moving in later this year. Meanwhile, the La Salle Corridor Revitalization continues to advance, with completed conversions projected to add roughly 1,800 new housing units downtown — turning former office towers into places people actually call home.
