Near North neighbors, the neighborhood's remarkable transformation keeps rolling — and the latest development might be its most ambitious yet. A brand-new private social club called The Lake is taking shape in River North, and its founder is targeting a September 2026 opening that would make it one of the most buzzed-about debuts in all of downtown Chicago this year.

The project is the vision of Liam Krehbiel, founder of Topography Hospitality, who is bringing serious pedigree to the endeavor — he's also a co-owner of Ballyfin Demesne, a celebrated luxury hotel in Ireland. The five-story clubhouse is rising at 205 West Superior Street, on the site where two older brick storefronts near Superior and Wells were cleared to make way for the build. At roughly 26,000 square feet, The Lake is being designed as a true members' home base, with plans for three distinct restaurants, two cocktail bars, a members' wine cellar, a rooftop terrace, three guest rooms, and a compact spa — all framed around upscale hospitality rather than a late-night nightlife scene.
