Palmer Square Park Is the Launch Pad for Logan Square's New Kid-Powered Bike Bus — and It's Pure Joy
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Palmer Square ·
Palmer Square neighbors, something special rolls out of your park every Friday morning — and it's picking up speed. The SJB Bike Bus, a parent-led cycling caravan, departs promptly at 7:40 a.m. from Palmer Square Park's iconic hand statue and winds its way through the neighborhood's signature boulevards to St. John Berchmans School. And the turnout? Absolutely electric. On a recent Friday, the bike bus had close to 60 participants — half of them kids — and an earlier ride drew nearly 75 cyclists. Organizer McCabe is now eyeing 100 riders before the school year wraps up.
The SJB Bike Bus is part of a fast-growing citywide movement. Chicago Family Biking, a coalition of parents, organizers, and educators, has counted eight active bike buses across Chicago — and over 100 across the United States. With parents serving as safety marshals, cheering kids through boulevard potholes, and filling the air with music and chants, the weekly ride has become a genuine neighborhood happening. Drivers slow down. Dogs stop to stare. Passersby can't help but wave.
With five rides still left before summer break, now is your chance to join in. The bus departs every Friday morning at 7:40 a.m. from Palmer Square Park — no registration required, just show up with your bike and your enthusiasm. And if you spot them cruising down Kedzie and Logan boulevards, give them a honk, a wave, or better yet, hop on.
