Galewood Neighbors Draft Their Own Dream for the Mars Site — And It's Ambitious

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Galewood ·

While developer McCaffery Interests has been making the rounds with its 500-unit housing proposal for the former Mars Wrigley factory at 2019 N. Oak Park Ave., Galewood residents aren't just pushing back — they're dreaming big with a counter-vision all their own. A neighborhood group has put forward a community-focused alternative plan for the iconic 20-acre site, one that includes a long-sought neighborhood library, a Mars history museum honoring the factory's nearly century-long legacy, a full-service grocery store, and an indoor sports center. It's exactly the kind of bold, community-led thinking that defines Galewood's civic character.

The stakes couldn't be higher. Galewood has gone without its own full-fledged library since 2010, with the nearest branch sitting roughly two miles away in Austin. Residents have made clear they see the landmarked Spanish Revival building along Oak Park Avenue — preserved under Chicago's landmark designation — as a once-in-a-generation opportunity to fill gaps the neighborhood has lived with for years. As longtime resident Idella Mister put it at a recent meeting: "We love our community, we're Galewood. For Mars to have one time been a staple, and now it's not, we have to make the most of that property."

With McCaffery noting the project could represent a $300 million investment — the largest in Galewood's history — the pressure to get it right is immense. No timeline for a final plan has been set, and community input is still very much shaping the outcome. Stay engaged and make your voice heard at galewoodneighbors.org.
