Amundsen Park Is Having Its Best Summer in Years — And Galewood Fought Hard for It

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Galewood ·

If you want to understand what Galewood is made of, look no further than Amundsen Park. The neighborhood's crown jewel green space — complete with a state-of-the-art track, football and soccer field, and a beloved fieldhouse — is buzzing with energy as summer 2026 kicks off. And that renewed sense of pride has a backstory: Galewood residents fought tooth and nail to keep it that way.

Not long ago, the Amundsen Park fieldhouse was threatened to be repurposed away from the community, sparking an outpouring of neighborhood resistance. Residents pushed back hard, and their voices won out — the fieldhouse was restored to full community use, a victory that still resonates on every block surrounding the park. Chicago Park District programs at Amundsen Park ran strong through the spring season, with the current session wrapping up June 7th, and summer programming is expected to keep the park's courts, fields, and fieldhouse in full swing for families across Galewood.

Whether you're lacing up for a lap around the track, signing the kids up for summer sports, or just soaking in the energy of a neighborhood that refuses to take its green spaces for granted, Amundsen Park is the place to be this June.
