Logan Square's $27M Makeover Is Complete — And the Neighborhood Has Never Looked Better
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Logan Square ·
Logan Square just hit a major milestone that years in the making: on Monday, June 22, Mayor Brandon Johnson joined Alderman Anthony Quezada and members of the community to officially cut the ribbon on the completed Logan Square Redesign and Milwaukee Avenue Reconstruction project — and neighbors, the wait was absolutely worth it.
The $27 million, one-acre transformation has reimagined one of Chicago's most iconic intersections from the ground up. At the heart of the project is the pedestrianization of the stretch of Milwaukee Avenue that once cut right through the square, replacing traffic with green gathering space and opening up the area for events, markets, and community life. The project also debuted La Placita, a brand-new public plaza right next to the Logan Square CTA Blue Line station, designed with direct input from local residents and a nod to the neighborhood's proud Latin American heritage. Historic globe light fixtures around the Centennial Monument — originally designed by architect Henry Bacon — have been fully restored to their original look, a win championed by Logan Square Preservation. And there's more on the horizon: construction on a long-overdue renovation of the Blue Line station canopy is set to begin this summer, marking the first major update to the station since it opened back in 1970.
Long-time neighbor Hector Gutierrez, who's called Logan Square home for 20 years, summed up the feeling well: "This is incredible what they've done." Lee Trinh, owner of Banh Mi Spot and a 15-year neighborhood fixture, agreed the new flow is a major improvement for everyone. This is your square, Logan Square — fresher, safer, and more beautiful than ever. Head down to La Placita and share your photos with your neighbors on Socialhood!
