Humboldt Park Just Hosted Chicago's Biggest Playdate Ever — and the Good Times Keep Rolling This July

Humboldt Park rang in the Fourth of July holiday weekend on a high note, fresh off one of the most joyful community gatherings the West Side has seen in years. Last Saturday, June 27, Mayor Brandon Johnson, the Department of Family and Support Services (DFSS), and Chicago Early Learning brought "Chicago's Largest Playdate" to the park as part of the city's America 250 celebrations. The free event drew families with children ages three to five, quickly selling out at 1,250 RSVPs — surpassing even the first Playdate held at Maggie Daley Park in April, which capped out at 1,000 attendees. Representatives from Chicago Early Learning were on hand to help parents plan and register for pre-school ahead of the 2026–2027 school year, making the morning as practical as it was playful.

And Humboldt Park isn't done dazzling its neighbors just yet. On Sunday, July 12, the park's iconic Boathouse at 1301 N. Humboldt Dr. becomes the backdrop for the Chicago Water Lantern Festival, kicking off at 5:30 p.m. Attendees will decorate personal lanterns with messages and intentions, then release them together across the lagoon at dusk in a choreographed, music-filled ceremony shared with over 2,000 fellow Chicagoans. Lanterns are eco-friendly — biodegradable, battery-powered, and fully collected after the event.

From the laughter of toddlers on the lawn to the glow of lanterns on the water, Humboldt Park is showing the city what community celebration looks like. Grab your tickets for the Water Lantern Festival at waterlanternfestival.com before they're gone.
