800 New Homes Coming to Archer Heights? The Bold Vision Inside the Moving Archer Forward Draft Plan
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Archer Heights ·
A sweeping new vision for Archer Heights and its neighboring Southwest Side communities is now officially on paper — and the numbers are striking. The Moving Archer Forward draft plan, released for public review this month, projects 800 new housing units and 280,000 square feet of new retail space to be built along the 6.3-mile Archer Avenue corridor over the next 10 to 20 years. The initiative is co-sponsored by the Chicago Department of Planning and Development and the Regional Transportation Authority.
At the heart of the plan is a push to shift Archer Avenue away from its traditionally industrial character and toward vibrant residential and commercial uses — especially near CTA Orange Line stations, where equitable transit-oriented development (ETOD) could unlock dense, family-friendly housing. Planners envision appealing to empty-nesters, longtime Southwest Siders, and new residents who want to live close to the train without leaving the neighborhood they love. City Council must still approve zoning changes before grant funding can flow to higher-density construction near those stations.
Neighbors have until Thursday, August 6 to submit feedback on the draft plan online at chicago.gov/Archer2025. This is a rare, once-in-a-generation opportunity to shape what Archer Heights looks and feels like for decades to come — so read the plan, share your thoughts, and make your voice heard before the comment window closes.
