Rogers Park's Historic Firehouse Is Getting a Second Life — as a Café, Event Space & Community Hub

Rogers Park neighbors, one of the Far North Side's most charming historic buildings is about to find a bold new purpose. A former Rogers Park firehouse — a 111-year-old city-owned landmark at 1721-23 W. Greenleaf Ave. — has been selected for a $3 million adaptive reuse transformation that will turn it into a neighborhood café, event space, and office facility. It's exactly the kind of preservation-meets-progress story that Rogers Park does best.

The Chicago Department of Planning and Development announced the winning redevelopment proposal, submitted by developer Ryan Cummings in partnership with Michael Salvatore of Heritage Hospitality Group. Their vision calls for a 2,000-square-foot coffee house alongside more than 4,000 square feet of event space and second-floor offices — all housed within the beautifully preserved historic shell of the old firehouse. City planning commissioner Ciere Boatright called it a "thoughtful proposal" that will reinforce the building's role as "a community anchor while complementing pedestrian-oriented retail activity on nearby Clark Street."
