Ride Smart This Weekend: Your Guide to the Loop 'L' Reroutes — Plus, Belugas Are Coming to the Lakefront!

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/The Loop ·

Loop neighbors, heads up before you head out this weekend — and next. The CTA's ambitious State/Lake 'L' station rebuild is entering a big construction push, and that means temporary closures at three familiar stops. Washington/Wabash, Adams/Wabash, and the elevated Clark/Lake station will all be shut down from 2 a.m. Saturday through 5 a.m. Monday, both this weekend (July 19–20) and next (July 26–27), affecting Brown, Green, Orange, and Pink Line riders. The good news: crews are using the downtime to work around the clock on the new elevated station — a long-term investment in the transit backbone that defines the Loop.

For riders navigating around the closures, Orange and Brown Line trains will run as a single combined route between Kimball and Midway via Wells and Van Buren. Pink Line trains will turn back at Clinton, with transfers to the Green Line available there. Green Line trains will reroute via Wells and Van Buren, stopping at Washington/Wells, Quincy, LaSalle/Van Buren, and Harold Washington Library–State/Van Buren. Blue Line service at Clark/Lake in the Dearborn subway continues uninterrupted.

And for some positively splashy news just down the lakefront: the Shedd Aquarium has agreed to take in abandoned beluga whales from a closed marine park in Canada — a feel-good wildlife rescue that's sure to delight Loop neighbors and visitors alike when the new arrivals settle in. Between big transit upgrades and big marine news, the Loop is never short on excitement. Share your weekend reroute tips — or your Shedd Aquarium excitement — with your neighbors right here on Socialhood!
