Pilsen Is Showing Up for Its Kids — and Its Culture — This August

August is shaping up to be one of the most community-rich months Pilsen has seen all year, and two upcoming events are giving neighbors plenty of reasons to get involved before summer winds down.

First, mark your calendars for August 21: Ald. Byron Sigcho-Lopez (25th Ward) is hosting a back-to-school block party at Union League Boys and Girls Club, 2157 W. 19th St., from noon to 6 p.m. The free celebration is loaded with everything Pilsen families need heading into the new school year — free school supplies, haircuts, vaccines, and a resource fair featuring more than 40 local organizations. A bounce house and dental clinic round out what promises to be one of the most practical and joyful afternoons of the summer for Southwest Side kids and parents alike. Chicago Public Schools open August 24, so the timing couldn't be better.

And if you're looking for something this weekend, Pilsen Public Art Tours has you covered. This Saturday, August 8, the beloved neighborhood mural tour returns with a special fundraiser edition benefiting the Pilsen/Little Village Uniting Voices Chicago Choir. Starting at 10:30 a.m. at the National Museum of Mexican Art (1852 W. 19th St.) and winding up at the Pilsen Arts & Community House (1637 W. 18th St.), the 90-minute guided tour is just $25 per person — and free for kids 12 and under.
