Milwaukee Avenue Goes Car-Free Today: 'Meet Me On Milwaukee' Returns for Its Second Summer Run

If you have plans this afternoon, you may want to reroute them — toward Milwaukee Avenue. Today, Sunday, August 31, marks the first of three car-free Sundays coming to Wicker Park this fall as the beloved "Meet Me On Milwaukee" street event series kicks off its second year. For a full afternoon, one of the neighborhood's busiest and most storied corridors will belong entirely to people on foot, bikes, and anything that doesn't run on an engine.
Milwaukee Avenue between Ashland and Damen avenues will once again be closed to car and bus traffic on the last Sundays in August, September, and October. The monthly events will close down Milwaukee Avenue between the Damen and North intersection and Ashland Avenue on Aug. 30, Sept. 27, and Oct. 25. Today's event is the first of those three Sundays, putting the 2026 series formally in motion.
The series is rooted in a straightforward but ambitious idea: take one of Chicago's most chaotic commercial strips and, for a few hours once a month, hand it back to the people who actually live and shop there. The collaboration between Alderman Daniel La Spata's office and the Wicker Park-Bucktown Chamber of Commerce launched last summer as a way to reimagine the often-hectic Wicker Park thoroughfare without vehicular traffic. La Spata announced the return of the series last month. The alderman's continued investment in the format signals that the 2025 debut was well-received enough to earn a second season — and an identical three-date structure.
For neighbors who walked Milwaukee Avenue during last summer's inaugural events, the format will feel familiar: the stretch between Ashland and the six-corner intersection at Damen, Milwaukee, and North becomes a pedestrian promenade, lined with local businesses whose sidewalk presence suddenly has a lot more room to breathe. Foot traffic is the whole point. Another goal was to drive more foot traffic to the area — something the Wicker Park Bucktown Chamber of Commerce has consistently prioritized as it works to support the corridor's independent businesses and newer arrivals alike.
The timing of today's event couldn't be better. Milwaukee Avenue has been on something of a roll in 2026, with a string of new operators choosing the corridor for brick-and-mortar commitments. Craft & Carvery's mortadella panuozzos and carving-station porchetta, Chicago Pickle Eatery's bodega-style sandwiches, and the recently announced Alo Yoga store all sit along or just off the stretch that goes car-free today. A Sunday afternoon with no buses or cars threading through means neighbors can actually browse those storefronts, linger over a sandwich at an outdoor table, or cut across the street mid-block without looking over their shoulder.
Milwaukee Avenue also has a second car-free occasion on the horizon worth circling on your calendar. The Wicker Park Fine Art Fair will be a free event sponsored by the Wicker Park Garden Club, working in collaboration with the Chicago Park District. That event, held at Wicker Park itself at 1425 N. Damen Ave., gives the neighborhood's arts community its own dedicated showcase as summer turns to fall — a complementary programming note to the street-level energy of Meet Me On Milwaukee.
For today, the simplest instruction is: go outside. Head to Milwaukee Avenue anywhere between Ashland and the six corners at Damen and North, and walk it end to end. Stop into a shop you've walked past a hundred times without going in. Grab something from one of the corridor's newer food spots. Bring the kids, bring the dog, bring a friend who keeps saying they need to spend more time in Wicker Park. The street is yours until the buses come back.
The next Meet Me On Milwaukee follows on Sunday, September 27, with a final date on Sunday, October 25 — a rare chance to experience Milwaukee Avenue in full fall color without a single CTA bus in the way.
