Fall Has Arrived in Washington Park: A Free Arts Market Today, a Science Future on the Horizon, and Halloween Coming Fast

By Socialhood News · Washington Park ·

Washington Park is having a full fall weekend — and if you haven't made it outside yet today, Saturday, October 3, there is still time. Artisanfest 513: Fall Fest is running from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Washington Park, bringing a free, family-friendly outdoor arts and vendor market to the neighborhood on one of the season's first genuinely crisp autumn days. The event is part of the broader Fall Porch Hours programming that the park has been hosting throughout the season, with the park open for free events daily through early October.

Fall Porch Hours at Washington Park have become a signature feature of the autumn calendar at the park, running daily with free programming that has included Blues & Brews, Drag Bingo, and live music sets under the Porch Set series. Last night, Friday, October 2, the Porch Set featured Aprina Johnson. Tonight, October 3, the series continues with Midnights in June performing from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. — meaning today alone offers both a daytime arts market and a free evening live music set in the same green space. Porch Hours run through 9 p.m. on Saturday.

For neighbors who like to start their Saturday mornings with a run, Washington Park is also one of three rotating stops for the Chicago Park District's Go Run Chicago free 5K and 1-mile run-walk series, which continues on Saturdays through November 12, 2026, starting at 9 a.m. The series is free and open to all skill levels, with registration required — details are available through the Chicago Park District.

Looking ahead to the end of the month, Washington Park will host what has become one of the South Side's most beloved Halloween traditions: the Upside Down Halloween Parade on October 31. The Chicago Park District event runs from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. along Russell Drive, and it flips the typical parade format on its head — instead of standing on the sidelines watching, kids and families become the parade itself, marching in costume past dance teams, acrobats, and sports mascots who do the entertaining. No costume? Not a problem: 2,000 costumes are given away at the gates. The event is free, with no registration required.

Beyond the season's events, Washington Park is also watching a longer-horizon project take shape that could become one of the neighborhood's most distinctive new destinations. Earlier this year, Fox 32 reported that a new educational science space called Scitopia Chicago is in planning stages for Washington Park, with a concept centered on transforming a long-vacant lot into a science destination with teenagers at the heart of the experience. The concept is bold — a South Side science hub designed not as a passive exhibit space but as an active destination where young people engage directly with science programming. Details on timeline and location are still developing, but for a neighborhood that already anchors one of the country's great cultural institutions in the DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center, a homegrown science destination would add a genuinely new dimension to Washington Park's identity as a place where learning, culture, and community converge.

For neighbors who want to take part in today's Artisanfest 513: Fall Fest or tonight's Porch Set with Midnights in June, Washington Park is located at 5531 S. Martin Luther King Dr. Full event calendars and programming details are available at the Chicago Park District's Washington Park page. The Washington Park Advisory Council meets every third Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. — visit washingtonpark.org for meeting schedules and updates on everything happening in the neighborhood.
