From Slurpees to Shostakovich: Graceland West's Former 7-Eleven Is Now a Classical Music Hub
By Socialhood News · Graceland West ·
A neighborhood corner that once sold lottery tickets and Big Gulps has been reborn as one of Graceland West's most talked-about cultural destinations. The former 7-Eleven at 4116 N. Clark Street has been transformed into "The CheckOut," the new home of Access Contemporary Music (ACM) — and the community couldn't be more excited about it.
ACM, a Chicago-based organization dedicated to making contemporary classical and new music accessible to broad audiences, chose the Graceland West storefront as its new venue after an extensive renovation. The name "The CheckOut" is a deliberate and playful nod to the building's convenience-store past — a wink from ACM's Executive Director Seth Boustead, an award-winning composer and the driving force behind the project. Boustead has described the transformation as a way to open up classical music to people who might never set foot in a traditional concert hall.
The space made its community debut in style during the Graceland West Neighborhood Fest, where Boustead performed a special piano set at 4:30 PM to mark the completion of the renovation and give neighbors a first look at the finished interior. The fest also featured Five Squared Pizza from 4:00–8:00 PM and a comedic juggling performance by Andy Head at 5:30 PM — a full block-party atmosphere that underscored just how warmly the neighborhood has welcomed its newest cultural anchor.
The official opening of The CheckOut followed on Friday, September 12. At a GWCA community meeting held inside the new space, Boustead shared the vision going forward: two evening events per week, with a strong interest in co-hosting with other local organizations, including area churches. The goal is for The CheckOut to function not just as a music venue but as a genuine community gathering place — something Graceland West has long prized.
The Graceland West Community Association (GWCA), founded in 1979 and headquartered at 4115 N. Greenview Ave., has championed the project as emblematic of the neighborhood's character. Bounded by Ashland, Montrose, Clark, and Irving Park Road, Graceland West has built a reputation over decades for quiet, tree-lined streets, strong schools, and an independent-minded local identity. The arrival of a live-music venue in a repurposed retail shell fits neatly into that story — scrappy, creative, and deeply rooted in place.
WBEZ Chicago covered the conversion in a piece titled "From Slurpees to Shostakovich," bringing citywide attention to what started as a hyperlocal passion project. For residents who walk or bike past 4116 N. Clark regularly, the change is hard to miss — and easy to love.
If you haven't visited The CheckOut yet, now is the time. With two events scheduled per week, there are plenty of opportunities to experience the space. Follow Access Contemporary Music and the Graceland West Community Association on social media for the latest programming announcements, or visit gracelandwest.org to stay current on neighborhood happenings. Whether you're a lifelong classical music fan or someone who's never been to a concert in your life, The CheckOut was built with you in mind.
