Uptown's Crown Jewel Finally Opens Its Doors: Tour the Iconic Uptown Theatre During Open House Chicago, Oct. 17–18
By Socialhood News · Uptown ·
Uptown neighbors, a once-in-a-generation opportunity is on the calendar — and you don't want to miss it. For the first time in decades, the general public will be able to walk inside the Uptown Theatre, the storied movie palace at 4816 N. Broadway that has sat shuttered since 1981. The Chicago Architecture Center announced this week that the Uptown Theatre has been added to the lineup for Open House Chicago, the annual free festival running October 17–18, 2026 — and the inclusion is already one of the most talked-about additions to the event's 16-year history.
Open House Chicago, now in its 16th year, provides free, behind-the-scenes access to more than 200 architecturally, historically, and culturally significant sites across the city — many of which are not normally open to the public. This year's festival features more than twenty sites that are brand new to the program, and the Uptown Theatre is easily the headliner of that new class. Visitors will be admitted in guided groups on both Saturday, October 17, and Sunday, October 18, with access to the Broadway lobby and — crucially — the auditorium itself, a space that last hosted a live act in 1981, when the J. Geils Band took the stage for what would become the building's final concert.
The numbers alone tell you what kind of building this is. The Uptown Theatre opened in 1925 as the crown jewel of the Balaban & Katz theater chain, with 4,381 seats — making it larger than the Chicago Theatre on State and Lake, which the same architects, brothers C.W. and George L. Rapp, had designed four years earlier. The Uptown featured a six-story grand lobby, ornate artwork, air conditioning at a time when that was still a novelty, floating-cloud and twinkling-light effects in its auditorium, and even a system designed to perfume the air beneath the seats. It was, in short, a building designed to make every person who walked through its doors feel transported to another world entirely.
"The Uptown Theatre is an extraordinary piece of architecture, from its massive 4,400-seat auditorium through the ornate details throughout its three lobbies," said Adam Rubin, senior director of public engagement at the Chicago Architecture Center. "It speaks to a time a century ago when going to the movies or a concert was to be transported into a fantastical world far from the bustling streets of Chicago." For a neighborhood whose entertainment legacy is already the envy of the city — the Aragon Ballroom (currently celebrating its own centennial this year), the Riviera, and the Green Mill all sit within a few blocks — being able to step inside the Uptown Theatre is a genuinely extraordinary thing.
No registration is required to attend Open House Chicago. Visitors simply show up at participating sites during the festival weekend — October 17 and 18 — and join the guided groups as they form. Note that not every site is open on both days, so it's worth checking the Chicago Architecture Center's website at architecture.org for the Uptown Theatre's specific schedule and hours before you make the trip.
While you're planning your Open House Chicago weekend, there's more happening in the neighborhood worth putting on your radar. The Chicago Fair Trade Museum & Store, located in Uptown, is hosting its Fall Clothing Swap on Friday, October 16 at 6:00 PM — the evening right before Open House Chicago kicks off. It's a community-minded, sustainable fashion event that fits perfectly with Uptown's ethos of creative, values-driven neighborhood culture. Details are available on Eventbrite.
For neighbors who have watched the Uptown Theatre's fate with hope and patience across multiple failed revival attempts over the decades, this Open House Chicago weekend offers something genuinely rare: a chance to stand inside one of America's greatest surviving movie palaces, see its gilded lobbies and vast auditorium with your own eyes, and experience firsthand why so many people have fought so hard to see it restored. Whether or not you've ever set foot inside before, this is the kind of moment that reminds you what makes Uptown irreplaceable on the map of Chicago's cultural life.
