From Indonesian Fare to Michelin-Grade Masa: Uptown's Restaurant Scene Just Got a Major Upgrade

By Socialhood News · Uptown ·

Uptown's reputation as one of Chicago's most culturally layered neighborhoods has always been built, in part, on its food. And this fall, two significant new additions to the neighborhood's dining landscape are making that case more convincingly than ever — with an Indonesian kitchen and a Michelin-pedigreed tortilleria both having arrived on Uptown's streets in 2026.

The first is Garuda, a new Indonesian restaurant that Block Club Chicago flagged as part of a wider Uptown dining update this fall. Indonesian cuisine remains genuinely rare on Chicago's North Side, and Garuda's arrival gives Uptown a flavor profile that few neighborhoods in the city can claim. The restaurant joins the Italian Cultural Center, which also recently added a restaurant component to its Uptown presence — a pairing that illustrates how the neighborhood's dining corridor continues to diversify well beyond its already celebrated anchor spots.

The bigger national headline, though, belongs to Molino Los Hermanos. According to Choose Chicago, the dual-concept tortilleria and restaurant from Michelin-starred chef Norman Fenton opened in Uptown in summer 2026. The concept centers on heirloom corn and traditional nixtamalization, featuring an in-house molino and an open kitchen that puts the craft of masa-based cuisine front and center. For food-minded neighbors — and for anyone who has followed chef Fenton's work — this is the kind of opening that puts Uptown on Chicago's culinary map in a new and serious way. Nixtamalization, the ancient Mesoamerican process of treating corn with an alkaline solution before grinding it into masa, is a technique that only a handful of restaurants in the entire city practice at this level of intentionality. Having an in-house molino — the stone mill itself — operating in Uptown means neighbors can watch and taste the full arc of the process, from dried heirloom kernel to finished tortilla.

Also new to the neighborhood in 2026 is Stylish Sin, a boutique apparel shop that Uptown Update spotted this past week preparing to open its doors. The store, whose motto is 'Let's Sin,' advertises itself as a destination for cyber, tech, goth, and streetwear — a niche that fits neatly into Uptown's long-running identity as a haven for subcultures, independent spirits, and people who don't shop at the mall. Uptown Update noted the store is expecting to draw plenty of customers from the Aragon Ballroom and the Riviera Theatre, both of which sit nearby and draw exactly the kind of crowd that would appreciate a well-stocked cyber and goth boutique steps away from the venue door.

Taken together, these three arrivals — Garuda, Molino Los Hermanos, and Stylish Sin — add to a year in which Uptown has also welcomed TimeLine Theatre Company's new permanent home. According to Choose Chicago, that $40 million venue features a 250-seat black box theater, exhibit galleries, a street-level bar, and dedicated spaces for education and community programming, more than doubling the company's previous capacity. The breadth of what has opened in Uptown in 2026 alone — a Michelin-connected restaurant, an Indonesian kitchen, a subculture fashion boutique, and a nationally recognized professional theater — is a reminder that this neighborhood's evolution is not moving in a single direction. It is expanding in every direction simultaneously.

For neighbors ready to explore, Molino Los Hermanos and Garuda are both open now, and Stylish Sin is preparing for its debut in the weeks ahead. And with Open House Chicago on the calendar for October 17–18 and Casino Uptown returning on October 15, there is no shortage of reasons to get out and experience what the neighborhood has become.
