After Nearly Two Years Without One, Wicker Park Is Finally Getting Its Post Office Back

By Socialhood News · Wicker Park ·

It is the kind of errand most neighborhoods take for granted — mailing a package, picking up a passport application, dropping off a certified letter — but for Wicker Park residents, it has required a detour for the better part of two years. That is about to change. The Wicker Park post office branch is expected to finally open in December, after the neighborhood's previous branch closed in early 2025.

The closure, which came in early 2025, was a source of real frustration for residents in one of Chicago's densest and most walkable neighborhoods. The incoming branch will open on Damen Avenue, putting it squarely in the heart of the neighborhood's commercial corridor and within easy reach of the Blue Line's Damen stop. For a community that has prided itself on being able to handle daily life on foot, having a functioning post office branch back on Damen Avenue is no small thing.

The timing of the December opening puts it neatly alongside a stretch of other arrivals that have been reshaping the neighborhood's commercial fabric this fall. Blank Street Coffee, the New York-born chain known for its matcha drinks and minimalist cafes, is preparing to open at 1588 N. Milwaukee Ave. — the former Starbucks Reserve space directly across from the Damen Blue Line stop — though no specific opening date has been announced. Blundstone, the popular Australian boot and footwear brand known widely for its Chelsea boot design, is also coming to Wicker Park, opening a brick-and-mortar shop at 1563 N. Milwaukee Ave. this fall. The storefront was previously occupied by the snowboarding gear company Burton, and before that was the longtime home of an American Apparel.

Taken together, the post office return and the wave of new arrivals reflect a neighborhood in active motion. The post office, though, carries a different kind of weight than a coffee chain or a boot shop. It is civic infrastructure — the kind of thing that makes a neighborhood function for everyone, not just those with discretionary spending. Its absence since early 2025 has been felt most acutely by residents who rely on USPS for everyday tasks: small business owners shipping orders, seniors mailing documents, families sending packages. The December reopening on Damen Avenue restores a basic community convenience that the neighborhood simply should not have had to go without.

For Wicker Park, the news also lands at a moment when the broader commercial picture along Damen and Milwaukee has been unusually full of activity. A new Ann Sather location opened on the Wicker Park–West Town border earlier this summer, taking over the former home of a Yolk restaurant at 1819 W. Division St. The location opened at 7 a.m. with much of the decor and murals of the original Belmont Avenue restaurant recreated in the space, and also features a to-go bakery section for its famous cinnamon rolls and other pastries. Meanwhile, the neighborhood's next major community gathering point is already on the calendar: the Wicker Park Advisory Council holds its monthly community meeting on Thursday, November 12, 2026, at 6:30 p.m., open to the public at the Wicker Park Field House, 1425 N. Damen Ave.

The post office's expected December arrival gives residents something concrete to look forward to as the neighborhood heads into its quieter winter rhythm. No specific opening date within the month has been confirmed yet. Residents who want to stay current on the exact timeline can follow Block Club Chicago, which reported the news on October 30, or check in with 1st Ward Ald. Daniel La Spata's office, which covers the area. And for anyone with a package that cannot wait until December, the nearest USPS branch in the interim remains accessible on foot or by Blue Line. The wait, at least, is nearly over.
