Artists Book House Secures $249K City Grant for Irving Park Cultural Hub Renovation

Irving Park's creative scene is set for a major boost as Artists Book House, founded by best-selling author Audrey Niffenegger of "The Time Traveler's Wife" fame, received a $249,032 Community Development Grant from the City of Chicago this month for exterior renovations at their new 4207 W. Irving Park Road location.

The grant will support the conversion of a former school building into a community arts center and bookstore that promises to transform the neighborhood's cultural landscape. Plans for the space include a bookstore and gallery, a library, and workshops for printmaking, paper making, and bookbinding. According to Niffenegger, the building will be a place where people can engage with books and storytelling using "every medium you can imagine." The author, who has lived in the neighborhood for years, noted that while Irving Park is home to many artists, the Far Northwest Side lacks spaces for those artists to gather or create.

Residents curious about this exciting addition can learn more by visiting the organization's website. The Artists Book House is currently fundraising for the project, which according to estimates will cost approximately $800,000 for the complete renovation. The nonprofit has been hosting open houses where board members share renovation plans and explain what they plan to offer the community. With programming expected to begin in phases as the renovation progresses, this new cultural center promises to make Irving Park a destination for book arts enthusiasts across Chicago.
