Wicker Park's Renovated Dog Park Reopens with Tail-Wagging Celebration

Wicker Park's beloved dog park is welcoming back its four-legged visitors after a comprehensive six-month renovation project. The park, located in the southeastern corner of Wicker Park at 1425 N. Damen Ave., will officially reopen this Saturday, November 16, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m., celebrating the completion of the $600,000 community-funded project.

The revamped 'Wicker Bark' features a 25 percent increase in size, new fencing, improved seating, concrete surfacing, and artificial turf. Dog owners will appreciate practical additions including a second entrance, a shade structure, and a new drinking fountain designed for both canines and their human companions. The impressive transformation was made possible through years of community fundraising efforts led by the Wicker Park Advisory Council, with significant contributions from state Rep. Eva-Dina Delgado, Alderman Daniel La Spata, the Chicago Park District, and numerous neighborhood donors.

"It's really exciting, and I'll be looking to form a volunteer committee and sponsors to help maintain it throughout the year," said Kristin Drutchas, who helped spearhead the campaign. The park, one of Chicago's first official "dog-friendly areas" established in the 1990s, had deteriorated over time with flooding issues and rotting fence posts. Dog owners and community members are invited to join local officials at Saturday's celebration to experience the upgraded space that reinforces Wicker Park's commitment to creating inclusive community spaces for residents and their furry companions.
