The long-awaited Chicago Market Co-op is on track for its grand opening in Uptown's historic Gerber Building later this year, bringing a community-owned grocery experience to the neighborhood. After more than a decade of grassroots organizing and planning, the
The 13,000-square-foot market will feature locally-sourced organic produce, a whole animal butcher shop, sustainable food options, and an expansive bulk selection, along with a learning center designed to engage community members. What makes this project unique is its cooperative ownership model – over 2,400 community members have purchased shares in the business, making it one of the largest food co-ops in the country. The market will create approximately 70 jobs initially, with plans to grow to 160 positions, prioritizing neighborhood hiring.
Uptown residents eager to support this community-driven initiative can become member-owners through the Chicago Market website, though non-members will also be welcome to shop when doors open. The market's focus on sustainable, ethical goods in the historic landmark property that served as a major train station for a century represents a perfect blend of Uptown's commitment to preserving its architectural heritage while embracing innovative community-focused businesses.
