Beloved Wicker Park Bookstore Volumes Bookcafe to Close in January After Decade of Community Service

A cherished literary landmark in Wicker Park is preparing for its final chapter as Volumes Bookcafe announced it will permanently close its doors in January 2026 after nearly a decade of service to the community. Sisters Kimberly and Rebecca George, who opened the independent bookstore and café at 1373 N. Milwaukee Avenue in 2016, made the difficult decision due to financial challenges including a significant drop in sales over the past year.
The cozy neighborhood space has been more than just a bookstore—it has hosted engagements, two weddings, and countless community events while watching neighborhood children literally grow up within its walls. "Bookstores, it's a third space," Rebecca George noted, highlighting the special role Volumes has played as a gathering place for the community. While preparing to wind down operations, the sisters emphasize they're still "business as normal" through the holidays, traditionally their busiest season. They'll begin offering sales on books, furniture, and café equipment after Christmas before closing permanently by the end of January. "This holiday season, we want it to be our best holiday season ever, and make sure that everyone gets a chance to come and say goodbye," George said.
Wicker Park residents and book lovers are encouraged to visit Volumes during its final weeks to support this local business and celebrate its legacy. For those looking to continue supporting independent booksellers, Volumes suggests exploring other indie bookstores, including participating in the Chicagoland Holiday Bookstore Trolley in December. As George emphasized, "The amount of money that's going directly back into your community is significantly higher with small businesses than it is with corporate America."
