Washington Park residents can look forward to a cultural celebration this holiday season as Africa International House (AIH) prepares to host its vibrant Pre-Kwanzaa Holiday Celebration & Marketplace at the historic Washington Park Refectory on December 20, 2025. From 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM, the beautiful venue will transform into a hub of culture and community, honoring the Kwanzaa principle of Umoja (Unity).
The event will feature one-of-a-kind handcrafted products, delicious foods, live music, engaging conversations, and storytelling, creating a festive atmosphere that celebrates African-American heritage and creativity. Organizers describe the marketplace as "more than an event—it's a celebration of unity, family, and shared heritage" and encourage community members to "bring your loved ones and experience the warmth, creativity, and power of our community coming together before Kwanzaa." The family-friendly cultural programming will include live music, food and drink, and various community activities throughout the day.
Residents seeking unique, locally-made holiday gifts while supporting neighborhood entrepreneurs should mark their calendars for this special celebration. The Washington Park Refectory, located at 5531 South Russell Drive, provides a stunning backdrop with its historic architecture and central location within one of Chicago's most treasured parks.
