Wicker Park Businesses Celebrate as Popular Car-Free 'Meet Me On Milwaukee' Set to Return in 2026

The popular 'Meet Me On Milwaukee' event series that transformed a busy section of Milwaukee Avenue into a pedestrian paradise will return to Wicker Park in 2026, following overwhelming success during its 2025 pilot program. The initiative, which closed Milwaukee Avenue between the Damen/North intersection and Ashland Avenue to vehicle traffic for seven hours on the last Sunday of August, September, and October, was a collaboration between Alderman Daniel La Spata and the Wicker Park Bucktown Chamber of Commerce.

The events dramatically boosted foot traffic to local businesses, with data showing triple the normal pedestrian counts during the August event compared to the same day in 2024, and double the typical numbers during September and October gatherings. "The business owners were absolutely thrilled with the turnout and, more importantly, the sales in their storefronts," said Chamber director Pamala Maass. Residents embraced the car-free experience, with many appreciating the family-friendly atmosphere. "It's a lot more enjoyable to be out here. I was just in one of these businesses and our kids, they wanted to play. We were able to say they could go outside, and I didn't have to worry about them," said Bucktown neighbor Colin Morris during one of the events.

While some enthusiastic participants suggested making the closures permanent or more frequent, organizers are planning a measured approach for 2026. "We had some very enthusiastic businesses and attendees to the event that were like, 'We want this every weekend.' And while that sounds fun, it's only special if it's special, so we'd like to see it come back in a very similar trajectory for 2026," Maass explained. Wicker Park residents interested in providing input on next year's program can contact the Chamber of Commerce or attend upcoming community meetings to share their experiences and suggestions.
