Community-Owned Chicago Market Co-op Set to Transform Uptown's Food Scene in 2026
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Uptown ·
Uptown residents eagerly awaiting the opening of Chicago Market will soon see their patience rewarded as the community-owned grocery co-op prepares for its grand opening in early 2026. Located in the historic Gerber Building at the Wilson CTA Station, this innovative food destination represents nearly a decade of community planning and investment.
The co-op, with over 2,465 community owners who have purchased shares, will transform the beautifully restored 1923 Beaux Arts-style landmark into a 13,000-square-foot grocery store featuring local, sustainably farmed, organic produce, meats, and dairy products. Beyond standard grocery offerings, Chicago Market will include a juice and coffee bar, educational workshops, and serve as a vibrant community gathering space. Dan Arnett, hired to manage the store, has been working with local producers throughout Illinois to establish supply chains for everything from Amish jams and pickles to partnerships with Chicago vendors like Phoenix Bean Tofu, Metropolis Coffee, and Gunthorp Farms.
Uptowners interested in supporting this community-driven initiative can still become co-op owners, though membership isn't required to shop at the store once it opens. The market will benefit from both public transit accessibility and a 40-space parking lot, making it convenient for residents and visitors alike while injecting millions into the local economy and creating 60-80 new jobs.
