Latino-Owned Bloc Dispensary Brings Art and Community Focus to Avondale

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Avondale ·

Avondale's business landscape continues to evolve with the recent opening of Bloc Avondale, a Latino-owned cannabis dispensary at 3545 N. Kedzie Ave. The business, which launched in a former mattress and paint warehouse, is the neighborhood's first social equity license dispensary and features a strong cultural emphasis with artwork by local artists.

The dispensary's interior showcases a thoughtful design centered around monarch butterflies, symbolizing immigration journeys and cultural connections. "The butterfly starts off on Kedzie and brings you down the corridor all the way through the artwork, through the milk breeds, like they do in their actual journey, and bring you into Avondale," explains owner Louis Lopez, who envisions the space functioning as a rotating gallery featuring local artists. Beyond retail, Bloc includes an outdoor green space intended for future community events.

Lopez sees the business as an opportunity to give back to the Latino community, particularly those affected by the war on drugs. The dispensary's diverse leadership team, including female executives, aims to increase representation in the cannabis industry while strengthening community ties in Avondale, recently recognized as the world's fifth coolest neighborhood by TimeOut magazine. Residents interested in supporting this new local business or attending future events can visit their location near the corner of Kedzie Avenue.
