Logan Square's Milwaukee Avenue Makeover Reaches Halfway Mark, La Placita Plaza Now Open to Public

Logan Square's ambitious Milwaukee Avenue Streetscape Project has officially reached its halfway point, with significant portions of the redesigned public spaces now open for community use. The massive overhaul, which began in April 2024, includes the creation of La Placita—a new pedestrian plaza near the Logan Square Blue Line entrance that is now accessible to residents and visitors, though final touches like benches will be installed in the coming weeks.
The comprehensive project, which spans from Belmont Avenue to Logan Boulevard, is transforming the neighborhood's main thoroughfare and iconic traffic circle. "I know overall this project was almost over a decade coming, from concept all the way to delivery, but the end is near," said Omer A. Rehman, vice president at Engineering Services Group, which is managing the project for the Chicago Department of Transportation. Once completed in summer 2026, the redesign will feature 70 sidewalk extensions, new trees, dotted bike lanes, a walking path around the square, two new plazas, new traffic lights, and raised crosswalks—all enhancing pedestrian safety and community connectivity.
As construction continues, the Logan Square Chamber of Commerce is working to support local businesses affected by the work, organizing community events including an upcoming restaurant crawl to increase visibility and encourage patronage during the transition period. Residents can expect to see two-way traffic implemented around the square before the end of the year, marking another significant milestone in this community-driven improvement project that began as a grassroots effort over a decade ago.
