Washington Park Pathology Lab Begins Final Preparations for Summer 2026 Opening
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Washington Park ·
Washington Park residents are seeing increased activity as the University of Chicago Medicine and City Colleges of Chicago enter the final phase of construction on their transformative healthcare development along Garfield Boulevard. The UChicago Medicine Clinical Labs and adjacent Malcolm X College Learning Center, which broke ground in 2025, are on track for their scheduled opening in summer 2026.
Both facilities are expected to open during the 2026-27 academic year, bringing substantial economic opportunities to the neighborhood. Together, the facilities will support approximately 600 jobs, including 200 newly created positions at UChicago Medicine. Several entry-level positions at the pathology lab will pay upwards of $60,000, with opportunities for raises and additional educational attainment—almost triple the neighborhood's reported median household income. The Malcolm X Learning Center will serve up to 800 students and establish the first clinical lab technician program in Chicago, while also featuring ground floor retail space that provides opportunities for local businesses with a built-in customer base.
Residents interested in learning about employment or educational opportunities can attend the Washington Park Chamber of Commerce's upcoming information session on January 28th at the Washington Park Fieldhouse. The session will provide details on training programs, job requirements, and the community benefits agreement that includes construction diversity goals of 35 percent minority-owned contractors and 6 percent women-owned contractors.
