Vacant Washington Park Corner Lot to Transform into New Housing Development

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Washington Park ·

A vacant corner lot in Washington Park will soon see new life as construction begins on a three-flat residential building on South Prairie Avenue. The city issued a permit for this development on January 7, marking another step forward in addressing underutilized space in the neighborhood where three of the four corners at the intersection of South Prairie and East 53rd Street currently sit vacant.

The new development at 5302 South Prairie will offer residents convenient access to public transportation, being just two blocks from both the Garfield and 51st Green Line elevated train platforms. The Garfield Red Line station is also nearby, with several CTA bus routes available within a four-block radius, including routes 3, 15, 29, and 55. This transit-oriented housing project represents ongoing efforts to strengthen the Washington Park neighborhood through thoughtful development that addresses housing needs while preserving community character.

Community members interested in learning more about this and other development projects can attend the next Washington Park Advisory Council meeting, where updates on neighborhood improvements are regularly shared. The Washington Park Chamber of Commerce also welcomes residents to participate in their upcoming community events to stay informed about positive changes happening throughout the area.
