Twin Three-Flats Greenlit on South Michigan Avenue, Signaling Continued Housing Momentum in Washington Park

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Washington Park ·

Washington Park's residential revival keeps picking up steam. The City of Chicago has just issued a construction permit for a brand-new three-flat residential building at 5167 South Michigan Avenue — and it's not alone. A twin development next door at 5165 South Michigan Avenue received an identical permit back in January, setting the stage for a matched pair of new homes to rise side by side on the block.

The back-to-back permits are the latest sign that builders are betting big on Washington Park's future. Future residents of both addresses will enjoy strong transit access, with the 51st Green Line platform less than four blocks to the northeast and CTA Route 15 bus service along 51st Street at the north end of the block. North-south riders can also hop the Route 21 bus just two blocks west on South State Street — making these new homes a commuter-friendly addition to the neighborhood.

The twin three-flats join a growing wave of new construction rippling through Washington Park, including a recently approved mixed-use development at 5050 S. Prairie Avenue that snagged a City Community Development Grant for 49 new apartments and ground-floor retail. Neighbors eager to track new developments and weigh in on the neighborhood's growth can connect with the Washington Park Chamber of Commerce or attend the Washington Park Advisory Council's monthly meeting, held the third Wednesday of each month at 7:00 p.m.
