Wicker Park's Polish Triangle Is Getting Chicago's First Self-Cleaning Public Restroom — And It's Free
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Wicker Park ·
A landmark quality-of-life upgrade is headed to one of Wicker Park's most iconic gathering spots. Chicago is set to install its very first automated, self-cleaning public restroom at the Polish Triangle — the storied intersection of Milwaukee, Division, and Ashland avenues, steps from the CTA Blue Line — as part of a citywide pilot program championed by First Ward Alderman Daniel La Spata.
The restroom, manufactured by JCDecaux — the same company behind Chicago's familiar bus shelters — features a clever two-toilet design: the bowls rotate between uses, so there's always a freshly cleaned one ready for the next visitor. Best of all, the facility will be completely free to use under the city's current contract, with installation and other costs covered by First Ward menu funds. La Spata's office confirmed the restroom should be operational by the end of 2026. The initiative has been years in the making, stemming from one of the ward's participatory budgeting cycles in which public restrooms ranked among the most popular proposals from residents, business owners, and homelessness advocates alike.
The announcement sparked lively conversation at a recent community meeting, with supporters pointing to the need for accessible facilities near a major transit hub, and some neighbors raising questions about winter operations and maintenance. It's exactly the kind of engaged civic dialogue that makes Wicker Park such a vibrant neighborhood. Want to weigh in? Tonight — Thursday, March 12 — the Wicker Park Advisory Council holds its monthly public meeting at 6:30 p.m. It's your chance to be part of the conversation shaping the neighborhood's future.
