Edgewater Neighbors Show Up: Broadway Rezoning Battle Heads to Court & Indoor Market Hits New Heights
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Edgewater ·
Edgewater's civic spirit is on full display this spring, with neighbors making their voices heard on two very different — but equally energetic — fronts.
First, the neighborhood's ongoing Broadway rezoning saga reached a new chapter this week. City attorneys have filed a motion to dismiss a lawsuit brought by a group of Edgewater residents who are challenging the upzoning of a nearly 1.5-mile stretch of Broadway — a reclassification that allows for taller, denser buildings and new business uses along the corridor. Cook County Circuit Court Judge Neil H. Cohen has scheduled a hearing for June 4, where both sides will have the opportunity to make oral arguments, which the judge noted is a matter of "public interest." Whether you supported the rezoning as a step toward housing affordability or stood with neighbors concerned about neighborhood character, one thing is clear: Edgewater's residents are deeply engaged in shaping the future of their community. On a lighter note, the Edgewater Indoor Market — held at the Broadway Armory at 5917 N. Broadway — has become a true winter gem. What began as a modest program with about 25 vendors has blossomed to around 75 vendors per event, featuring fresh produce, baked goods, handmade goods, and local plant shops like Pot O' Greens. If you missed this season's final Saturday markets, look ahead: the Edgewater Chamber of Commerce's popular Monday Farmers Market returns June 1, running every Monday from 3–7 p.m. with 40+ vendors. Edgewater is proof that community engagement never really takes a season off.
