A Theater Finds Its Forever Home, a Ballroom Wins a Preservation Honor, and Yemeni Coffee Is Coming to Broadway

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Uptown ·

May is off to a milestone-packed start in Uptown, and neighbors have plenty to celebrate. After years of anticipation, TimeLine Theatre Company is opening its new permanent home in the neighborhood this month — a landmark moment for one of Chicago's most acclaimed theater companies and a major cultural win for a neighborhood already brimming with arts energy. Sneak previews and community open houses led up to this official May debut, cementing Uptown's status as a serious destination for Chicago's performing arts scene.

And Uptown's architectural crown jewel is getting some well-deserved recognition. The Aragon Ballroom at 1106 W. Lawrence Ave. has been named a 2026 Preservation Excellence Award winner by the City of Chicago — one of a select group of standout restoration and rehabilitation projects citywide to receive the honor. The award will be presented at the Chicago Preservation Expo on May 18 at the Chicago Cultural Center, a fitting salute to a century-old ballroom that has anchored Lawrence Avenue for generations.

Meanwhile, coffee lovers have something fresh to look forward to on Broadway. Queen Yemeni Coffee is confirmed to be coming soon to the former Starbucks space at Lawrence and Broadway — filling a corner that has seen several near-misses over the past five years with a locally rooted, culturally rich café concept. From a theater's homecoming to a ballroom's honors to a new brew on the block, Uptown is stacking wins this May. Stay tuned to exploreuptown.org and right here on Socialhood for every update!
