Washington Park is well known for the wave of big-dollar investments reshaping its future, but right now, two of its most enduring cultural anchors are quietly having a moment worth celebrating. The DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center — one of the oldest and most respected institutions of African American history in the country — continues to anchor the neighborhood at the edge of the park, while just a few blocks away, the Arts Block along Garfield Boulevard is buzzing with creative energy as spring programming ramps up.
At the heart of the Arts Block sits the L1 Retail Store and Arts Incubator, housed inside the historic first 'L' station built in 1892. Operated by Arts + Public Life in partnership with the University of Chicago's Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, L1 gives South Side creative entrepreneurs dedicated storefront space, a structured curriculum, and a network to help launch and grow their businesses — with a specific mission to lower barriers to business ownership for Washington Park residents.
