Washington Park Is Getting a $28M Intergenerational Affordable Housing Community — and Construction Is Underway
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Washington Park ·
Washington Park neighbors, the wave of transformative investment in your community just keeps growing. The Abrams Intergenerational Village — a brand-new, six-story, 71-unit affordable housing development at 5300 South Calumet Avenue — has cleared a major milestone, with the City of Chicago issuing a full building permit that puts construction officially in motion. At $28 million, it's one of the most meaningful housing investments the neighborhood has seen in years.
What makes this development truly special is its mission. Developed by The Renaissance Collaborative and designed by the acclaimed firm Moody Nolan, with UJAMAA Construction as general contractor, Abrams Intergenerational Village is built specifically to bring generations together under one roof. All units will be affordable and designed for independent seniors, "grandfamilies" — households where grandparents are raising grandchildren — and younger tenants and students who will actively support elderly residents. On-site social services will also be available, and residents will enjoy shared amenities including a library, computer room, fitness center, lounge areas, and a community dining hall. The unit mix spans studios through three-bedroom apartments, with 37 units fully accessible.
This is exactly the kind of rooted, community-centered development Washington Park deserves — affordable, multigenerational, and right on the Green Line. And with summer just getting started, don't forget that the African/Caribbean International Festival of Life returns to Washington Park the July 4th weekend, celebrating the music, cuisine, and culture of African and Caribbean nations. Stay connected with the Washington Park Advisory Council, meeting every third Wednesday at 7:00 p.m., to keep up with everything rising in this incredible neighborhood.
