Neighbors Dream Big for Edgewater's Last Open Lakefront: Could 5959 N. Sheridan Become a Public Park?

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Edgewater ·

A spirited community conversation is unfolding along Edgewater's lakefront — and the outcome could shape the neighborhood's shoreline for generations. A coalition of residents called Edgewater Residents for Responsible Development (ERRD) has issued a formal call for the Chicago Park District to purchase the property at 5959 N. Sheridan Road — home to Emanuel Congregation — and transform it into public parkland, completing what they describe as the North Side's lakefront park system.

The site is widely considered the largest remaining parcel of developable lakefront land in Edgewater. Emanuel Congregation, which has called the neighborhood home for over 70 years, has been working with developer Fern Hill on a redevelopment proposal that, in its latest form, envisions multiple buildings along Sheridan Road — including a reimagined synagogue, housing, and retail. The project team has updated its plans multiple times based on community feedback, most recently incorporating requests for more green space, better pedestrian access, and improved natural light. ERRD says it isn't telling Emanuel what to do with its land — but wants the public park option firmly on the table.

Meanwhile, a separate ERRD lawsuit challenging the city's Broadway Land Use Framework is heading toward a pivotal moment, with Circuit Judge Neil Cohen expected to issue an opinion in July. Whether you're watching the lakefront debate or the Broadway corridor case, Edgewater's civic engagement is as vibrant as ever. Follow the latest at blockclubchicago.org and edgewater.org.
