Bucktown Is Building Its Fitness Future: Two New Gyms Are Opening This Summer — And a New Residential Building Just Got the Green Light

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Bucktown ·

Bucktown's reputation as one of Chicago's most active neighborhoods is getting a serious boost this summer, with not one but two brand-new gyms set to open their doors on the North Side. Bucktown Assembly, taking shape inside the former Armitage Auto Repair shop at 2036 W. Armitage Ave., is the brainchild of trainer Ashley Stephen and business partner Erik Nelson. The duo is transforming the space into an expansive gym centered on strength training and HYROX workouts — and they're aiming to open in July. Their vision goes beyond the barbell: the "assembly" name says it all, as Stephen and Nelson want the space to be a genuine community gathering spot where neighbors connect before and after their sessions.

Over on Milwaukee Avenue, trainer Malik Scott is rebranding his long-running fitness operation into More Than Fit at 1852 N. Milwaukee Ave. Scott — who has coached youth athletes through partnerships with Chicago City Soccer Club and Pulaski International School — brings a holistic approach to fitness that weaves together goal setting, behavioral change, and mental wellness alongside physical conditioning. His doors are already open and welcoming clients.

Meanwhile, Bucktown's housing story keeps growing. The Chicago City Council formally approved a new four-story, 30-unit residential building at 1801 N. Winnebago Ave. — steps from The 606 Trail — replacing a long-dormant parking lot. Designed by Bucktown-based Red Architects, the project is a neighborhood win years in the making. Between two fresh fitness studios and a newly approved residential building right off the trail, it's a big week for Bucktown. Check out Bucktown Assembly and More Than Fit on social media to follow their progress — and welcome them to the block!
