Paws Up, Uptown! Chicago Paws District Opens on Broadway — and the Historic Uptown Theatre Is Back in the Spotlight

Dog lovers and history buffs both have reason to celebrate this week in Uptown. Chicago Paws District has officially opened its doors at 4520 N. Broadway, bringing a brand-new dedicated canine campus to the heart of the neighborhood. After a long journey through construction and permitting, the expansive facility now offers doggy daycare, overnight boarding, training, and camps — making it a full-service destination for Uptown's many four-legged residents. As a bonus, the back of the historic McJunkin Building now features a newly fenced outdoor area next to the Aldi parking lot, giving pups a safe space to stretch their legs. It's a welcome upgrade to one of Broadway's most iconic addresses.

Meanwhile, one of Uptown's grandest landmarks is having a moment of its own. The iconic Uptown Theatre at 4816 N. Broadway — which opened in 1925 but has been dark since 1981 — is back in the conversation in a big way. Caretaker Dave Syfczak recently took media on a behind-the-scenes tour, showcasing the venue's breathtaking ornate columns, grand staircase, towering windows, and priceless chandeliers — including gilding made of 24-karat gold leaf. Advocates and community leaders continue to push for its restoration, with groups like Friends of the Uptown rallying behind a renewed public-private effort to bring this crown jewel back to life.
