South Side Entrepreneurs Are Leveling Up: Washington Park's Historic 'L' Station Is Launching a Creative Business Accelerator

Washington Park neighbors, a piece of neighborhood history is being put to work for the next generation of South Side entrepreneurs — and the results are already turning heads. The L1 facility, housed inside the historic first 'L' station built in 1892 on Garfield Boulevard, is now home to a creative business accelerator operated and managed by Arts + Public Life. The 700-square-foot flexible storefront space is designed to house three South Side entrepreneurs committed to scaling their creative businesses over two years, with a clear preference for owners serving a predominantly South Side customer base.

Arts + Public Life is partnering with Proximity to facilitate the accelerator program, which targets motivated early-stage creative business owners — those running retail, service, and arts-based ventures — who are ready to graduate from in-home or online operations into a real brick-and-mortar presence. It's an inspired reuse of one of Chicago's oldest transit landmarks, blending neighborhood heritage with forward-looking economic empowerment.

And there's even more on the horizon for Washington Park: the International Festival of Life returns to the park September 25–27, 2026, celebrating the music, cuisine, and traditions of African and Caribbean nations — a perfect bookend to a summer full of community milestones.
