African Festival of the Arts Returns to Washington Park This Weekend — Plus Your Complete Fall Kickoff Guide

By Socialhood News · Washington Park ·

Washington Park neighbors, September is arriving with a celebration worthy of the season. This weekend, the neighborhood's iconic green space becomes the epicenter of one of Chicago's most beloved cultural festivals — and with new fall programming launching the following week, the community's calendar is as rich as it's ever been.

The African Festival of the Arts returns to Washington Park on September 5–7, 2026, bringing three days of art, music, food, fashion, and culture from across the African diaspora to the South Side. Presented by the Association for International Healing USA (AIH), the festival is the organization's flagship annual event, and it has long made Washington Park its home stage. Expect vendors, live performances, and a full immersion in the creative traditions that stretch from the continent to the South Side — all of it free and open to the public in one of Chicago's most storied outdoor settings.

If the African Festival of the Arts sets the tone for early September, the International Festival of Life is already on the horizon: that celebration is slated for Washington Park on September 25–27, giving the neighborhood back-to-back weekends of major cultural programming as autumn takes hold.

Meanwhile, a more practical but equally exciting transition is underway at the Washington Park pool. The facility has shifted to its late-summer schedule, running August 22 through September 7 — meaning this weekend is also your last chance to take a dip before the pool closes for the season. If you haven't made it to the water yet, now is the moment.

And just one week from today, Washington Park's fall programming season officially launches. The Chicago Park District's fall session runs from Tuesday, September 8 through Sunday, December 13, and the lineup at Washington Park is genuinely deep. Archery instruction runs every Wednesday from 4 to 6 p.m., September 9 through December 9 (with a break November 11). Dance is on the calendar every Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., September 10 through December 10, at just $10 for the season. Chair Exercise — free of charge — is offered both Tuesdays from 10:15 to 11:15 a.m. and Thursdays at the same time. Basketball Skills and Fun and Games (a Special Recreation program for ages 8 and up, running Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 3 to 6 p.m.) round out a roster designed to serve every corner of the community, from kids to seniors.

Online registration opened August 4, and in-person registration began August 10, so if you haven't signed up for fall programs yet, don't wait — popular classes fill fast. Head to the Chicago Park District website to browse the full Washington Park program list and register.

For residents who want to stay plugged into everything the neighborhood has going on beyond the park's own calendar, the Washington Park Advisory Council meets every third Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. — and with a fall this full, it's the best place to make your voice heard and stay ahead of what's coming next.
