This Week in West Ridge: A Fermentation Science Night, a Free Shred Day, and Public Art Riding Devon Avenue

By Socialhood News · West Rogers Park ·

West Rogers Park neighbors have a packed week of community happenings ahead, and the West Ridge Chamber of Commerce is behind all of it. From a quirky science-meets-sour event at a neighborhood café to a free document-shredding morning at Devon Bank, the next ten days offer plenty of reasons to get out and engage — and a stroll down Devon Avenue offers one more: a set of ten kaleidoscopic public sculptures that have quietly transformed the corridor into an outdoor gallery.

First up on the calendar is Fermentor Fridays: Science Meets Sour, scheduled for Friday, October 9, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Monarch Café, 7010 N. Clark St., Chicago. The event is billed as a place where science meets the sour — meaning fermentation culture, the microbial art behind everything from sourdough to kimchi to kombucha, gets its moment in the spotlight in a neighborhood setting. Monarch Café, tucked at the north end of the West Ridge commercial district, provides the backdrop for what promises to be an evening that's equal parts education and fun. The West Ridge Chamber of Commerce is listing the event as part of its fall programming, making it an official neighborhood gathering rather than just a bar night.

Then, just two days later, the Chamber is hosting its Fall Shred Day on Saturday, October 11, from 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM at Devon Bank, 6445 N. Western Ave. — the same parking lot that served as the departure point for September's Restaurant Crawl. Shred Day is a practical community service that lets residents safely dispose of sensitive documents: tax records, old financial statements, medical paperwork, and anything else that shouldn't simply go in the recycling bin. Events like this one are easy to overlook, but they're a genuine neighborhood resource, particularly for the many long-term residents and seniors in West Rogers Park who accumulate years of paperwork and have few easy options for secure disposal. The West Ridge Chamber has been running Shred Days as a recurring community benefit, and this fall edition arrives at a natural moment — when people are clearing out before the end of the year.

Meanwhile, anyone walking Devon Avenue this fall is likely to notice something new and visually striking: ten kaleidoscopic sculptures installed along the corridor as part of the Tuk Tuks on Devon public art program. The initiative is sponsored by Devon Avenue businesses, the Rogers Park Business Alliance, and the Devon Avenue Special Service Area #43 — one of Chicago's 57 active Special Service Areas, which are local tax districts that fund expanded services and programs through a localized property tax levy. The sculptures are sited at participating businesses along the avenue, turning a walk down Devon into a kind of scavenger hunt through the neighborhood's most internationally famous commercial strip. Among the participating locations listed in the West Ridge Chamber's 2026 Community Directory: Kol Tuv at 2938 W. Devon Ave. and Music House Inc. The works are by local artists, including Bari Fleischer at Kol Tuv and Richard Trumbo at Music House, grounding the project in the neighborhood's own creative community rather than importing art from outside.

The Tuk Tuks on Devon project fits naturally into West Ridge's growing identity as a neighborhood that uses its commercial corridors for more than commerce. Devon Avenue has long drawn visitors from across the Chicago region for its extraordinary concentration of South Asian, Middle Eastern, Eastern European, and global restaurants and shops — a corridor unlike almost anything else in the American Midwest. Adding public sculpture to that mix invites people to slow down, look more carefully, and see the street as something layered and living rather than just a place to park and eat.

For neighbors looking to close out the week on a cultural note, the Nextdoor community board for West Ridge is also flagging a Jazz Links Jam Session for young musicians ages 9 to 19 on October 14 — free of charge, and aimed squarely at the neighborhood's next generation of performers.

All three Chamber-organized events this week are free or low-barrier to attend. Fermentor Fridays at Monarch Café (7010 N. Clark St.) runs Friday, October 9, from 6:00–8:00 PM. Shred Day at Devon Bank (6445 N. Western Ave.) runs Saturday, October 11, from 8:30–11:30 AM. And the Tuk Tuks on Devon sculptures are viewable any time you're out on the avenue. Have you spotted any of the sculptures yet — or do you have a favorite stop on Devon you're hoping is part of the installation? Share it with your neighbors right here on Socialhood.
