A Free Outdoor Concert Is Coming to West Ridge Nature Park — and It's Unlike Anything You've Heard in the Neighborhood

By Socialhood News · West Rogers Park ·

West Rogers Park has no shortage of community events this fall, but one coming up next Wednesday stands apart: a free, all-ages outdoor concert that turns the lagoon trail at West Ridge Nature Park into a living, moving stage. "We The People" — presented by Hearing in Color and its resident vocal ensemble, Chroma — is set for Wednesday, October 14, from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM at West Ridge Nature Park, 5801 N. Western Ave.

The format alone makes this one worth showing up for early. Rather than a traditional sit-down performance, the concert is structured as a "song walk" — a format in which the ensemble performs at four different locations around the park's lagoon, with the audience moving between them. It's an immersive experience that turns the park itself into part of the program, weaving music through one of West Rogers Park's most beloved green spaces rather than simply placing a stage in the middle of it.

Chicago-based organization Hearing in Color describes Chroma as its resident vocal ensemble, and the group's programming for "We The People" reflects both its artistic ambitions and its community roots. The concert features music by Chicago-based composers Ayanna Woods and Jalen Scott, alongside selections inspired by artists like Beyoncé. The program blends contemporary classical works, reimagined favorites, and new voices — all in service of a central question the ensemble is posing directly to the audience: what does it mean to feel welcome, and how do we celebrate the many voices that shape our community?

For West Ridge Nature Park, this kind of programming is a natural fit. The park — a 22-acre urban nature sanctuary tucked between Western Avenue and the North Shore Channel — is already one of the neighborhood's most visited destinations, drawing walkers, birders, and families year-round to its lagoon, native plantings, and unpaved trails. Bringing a vocal ensemble into that setting, performing at four separate points around the water, offers neighbors an evening that's equal parts art, reflection, and a reason to be outside on a mid-October night.

The concert was originally scheduled for Wednesday, September 2 before being rescheduled to this fall date. The reschedule brings it into prime autumn weather territory — and into a neighborhood calendar that, between the Tuk Tuks on Devon sculptures still on view along the avenue and the ongoing West Ridge Chamber programming, is having a particularly rich cultural moment.

Admission is free, and the event is open to all ages, listed under the Chicago Park District's Night Out in the Parks series and its Arts & Culture programming. No tickets are required. The song walk begins at 5:00 PM sharp at West Ridge Nature Park, 5801 N. Western Ave. — parking is available along Western Avenue, and the park is accessible by CTA as well. Plan to arrive a few minutes early to get oriented before the ensemble begins moving.

Have you attended a Night Out in the Parks event at West Ridge Nature Park before, or will this be your first time at the lagoon after dark? Share your plans — and your experience afterward — right here on Socialhood. And if you spot a neighbor who hasn't heard about this one yet, pass it along: free outdoor concerts with this kind of musical vision don't come around every week.
