West Rogers Park Residents Join Citywide Treasure Hunt for Rare Historic Coins
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/West Rogers Park ·
West Rogers Park residents are taking part in an exciting neighborhood treasure hunt as local coin collector Jon Martin distributes rare, early American coins throughout the area. Martin, 38, who possesses an extensive collection of coins from the early 1800s, has decided to share his passion by hiding 10 valuable pieces around the neighborhood for community members to find through the end of the year.
Three coins have already been discovered since mid-August, including an 1830 Coronet Head Large Cent, an 1806 Draped Bust Large Cent, and the rarest find so far – an 1800 Draped Bust Half Cent. Martin posts clues to the coins' locations on the Nextdoor app, sharing photos containing subtle hints that neighborhood residents would recognize. The impromptu community project has educational value as it raises awareness about these historic copper coins, many of which are corroding and may be unrecognizable in another century. "I don't know, maybe one kid or one person will find one and it will ignite a passion," Martin explained.
Seven more coins dating between 1800 and 1835 remain to be found, each being among fewer than 10,000 left in the world. West Rogers Park residents are encouraged to follow the Nextdoor app for upcoming clues and join in this unique opportunity to discover a piece of American history while exploring their neighborhood. Whether you're a coin enthusiast or simply enjoy a good treasure hunt, this community activity offers something special for everyone in West Rogers Park.
