Graceland West's Pollinator Garden Initiative Expands with New Community Planting Day

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Graceland West ·

Graceland West is buzzing with excitement as the community prepares for its final pollinator garden installation of the season. The GWCA's ECO-Green Committee, which has already developed seven Native Plant Pollinator Pathway and Stormwater Absorption parkway corners throughout the neighborhood, will host a community planting day this Saturday to complete their eighth installation. Each of these carefully designed sites absorbs an average of 2,000 gallons of stormwater annually while creating vital habitat for native pollinators.

The initiative has already gained recognition across Chicago, with the Graceland West Community Association receiving a Chicago Excellence in Gardening Awards (CEGA) Honorable Mention for their pollinator pathway sites. These gardens exemplify Chicago's motto "Urbs in Horto" (City in a Garden) while making the neighborhood more resilient to climate challenges. Residents interested in participating in Saturday's planting or learning more about upcoming sustainability initiatives, including the new pollinator garden sites and kids planting day, are encouraged to email [email protected]. The community association is actively seeking volunteers for their fall and spring ecological projects.

Looking ahead to 2025, the Chicago Excellence in Gardening Awards program is set to resume after a one-year hiatus, offering Graceland West gardeners another opportunity to showcase their environmental stewardship. Community members interested in participating or volunteering with the citywide awards program can contact [email protected] to help make next year's program a success.
