Graceland West neighbors have a reason to set their alarms a little earlier this Saturday morning: the Graceland West Community Association is hosting a free Yoga in the Park session at Warner Park and Gardens, 1444–46 Warner Ave, on September 6th from 9:45 to 10:45 AM — just one week before the neighborhood's flagship block party.
The outdoor class is free and open to all Graceland West residents 18 and older. Participants are encouraged to bring their own mat or a throw rug and meet their neighbors in one of the neighborhood's most beloved green spaces. Warner Park, tucked into the residential blocks east of Ashland, offers the kind of serene, tree-canopied backdrop that makes a Saturday morning stretch feel more like a retreat than a workout. It's exactly the kind of low-barrier, high-reward community event the GWCA has built its 47-year reputation on.
For neighbors who've been following the GWCA's packed late-summer calendar, Saturday's yoga session is a quieter prelude to the main event the following weekend. And this year, the Graceland West Neighborhood Fest on September 13 is shaping up to be one of the most programmatically rich in recent memory — with a slate of newly announced details that go well beyond the headline.
Running from 3:00 to 8:00 PM on the 4100 block of North Greenview Avenue (between Belle Plaine and Warner), the fest will feature caricatures by Kenny Durkin from 3:30 to 5:30 PM, custom tie-dye t-shirts also available from 3:30 to 5:30 PM, and a comedic juggling performance by Andy Head at 5:30 PM. DJ Dan Larson will be spinning music all day, while kids can look forward to a bounce house, carnival games, a basketball hoop, and cornhole. A Youth Trivia Contest (5:00–5:30 PM) and an Adult Trivia Contest (6:30–7:00 PM), both hosted by Stewpendous Trivia, will give competitive neighbors of every age their moment to shine.
Food this year comes courtesy of Five Squared Pizza, serving from 4:00 to 8:00 PM. The Detroit-style pizza outfit — a husband-and-wife duo who left corporate careers in 2019 to follow their culinary dreams — uses organic ingredients and scratch-made dough, making them a fitting addition to a neighborhood that prizes local and independent.
For those who want to compete for more than bragging rights, the Euchre Tournament Fundraiser runs from 3:30 to 5:30 PM with a $30 buy-in per player and cash prizes on the line. One spot was still open as of this week — interested players can email Paul at [email protected] to claim it. A silent auction and a 50/50 raffle round out the fundraising lineup, with all proceeds supporting the GWCA's all-volunteer programming.
Neighbors will also find booths from Friends of Lake View High School, Lakeshore Sport & Fitness, Quantum Leep Academy, and Access Contemporary Music — the latter making its second major community appearance since opening at 4116 N. Clark this summer. GWCA memberships and a new line of branded merchandise, including tumblers, cozies, and magnets, will be available for purchase on-site.
